The day-long visit to
Delacroix Island during the
Smithsonian Study Tour,
Louisianas Cajuns and
Creole Country in March 2001 was
definitely one of the highlights
of our trip. Members of the
Canary Islands Descendants
Association received our group
with such hospitality, and with a
full day of activities planned,
enabled tour participants to gain
insight into the rich and
colorful culture of the
Isleños.
Our memorable afternoon
included a visit to a family-run
oyster factory, a picnic lunch at
a local members home, and a
wonderful bazaar of arts and
crafts. We were serenaded by the
decimas of Irvan Perez and well
fed by his wife Louises
caldo and Antonia Gonzales
homemade cookies. Donna Mumfrey
even dressed in the traditional
Canary Islanders costume
and spoke on the history of the
community. Our participants were
thrilled!
While teaching us about the
unique culture of this small
community, the Canary Islands
Descendants Association made our
group feel welcome and created an
afternoon that most of us will
never forget.
